Functional freeze – the third stress response few people know about
When the body can no longer respond with fight or flight, it enters a state of deep shutdown.
This is an automatic brain response that, when it becomes chronic, can lead to persistent fatigue, brain fog, dural tension and loss of vital energy.
What is Functional Freezing

Beyond the well-known fight or flight responses, there is a third physiological stress reaction: Functional Freezing.
It is a condition in which the body, overwhelmed by prolonged stress or traumatic experiences, enters a deep defensive shutdown, mediated by the dorsal vagal nerve — the most ancient and primitive branch of the autonomic nervous system.
To protect itself, the brain “pulls the emergency brake”:
- higher cognitive functions are reduced
- movement and energy decrease
- mental clarity fades
From the outside, a person may appear “normal”, but internally they experience a physical, emotional and cognitive freeze that often becomes chronic.
Signs that your nervous system is frozen
Common signs of functional freezing include:
- Emotional disconnection – you go through daily life but feel distant, numb or emotionally flat.
- Physical rigidity or slowness – muscle tension, shallow breathing, persistent fatigue, digestive difficulties.
- Brain fog and mental confusion – reduced concentration, memory issues, constant mental “fog”.
- Living on autopilot – functioning out of habit, without enthusiasm or true presence.
- Apathy and loss of motivation – nothing feels engaging anymore; the nervous system is stuck in survival mode.
What happens in the brain and the body
Functional Freezing profoundly alters nervous system physiology:
- reduced cerebrospinal fluid circulation, impairing brain detoxification
- decreased oxygenation and neuronal metabolism
- increased cortisol production
- increased tension in the dura mater and fascial system
Over time, this state may contribute to chronic fatigue, brain fog, anxiety, insomnia and postural dysfunctions.
How we treat functional freezing at Milano Chiropratica

At Milano Chiropratica – Integrated Natural Medicine Center, we address Functional Freezing through a scientific, natural and multidisciplinary approach, based on chiropractic functional neurology.
The clinical pathway includes:
- comprehensive neurological and postural assessment
- dural and vagal release techniques
- advanced chiropractic care
- psychological support and EMDR therapy
- breathing re-education
The goal is to reactivate the nervous system, improve cerebrospinal fluid circulation and restore energy, clarity and regulation.
Restore clarity, energy and presence
Functional Freezing is not a disease, but an adaptive survival response of the brain to prolonged stress.
With the right therapeutic approach, it is possible to “unfreeze” the nervous system and restore the connection between body, brain and breath.
